Abstract

This article contains a description of four open-line programs specializing in public issues, broadcast by four French AM radio stations in Quebec, three privately owned stations and one public network station. It refers especially to the summer of 1990 and the Amerindian Crisis. It discusses the regulatory and organizational context of radio broadcasting, emphasizing how these talk show hosts are approaching their work. It identifies certain difficulties experienced by the private AM radio stations, which lead in particular to improverished information and to a shift in favor of controversy in most of these programs.
