Abstract

Summary: Characteristics of X ray sources for the collection of diffraction data from crystals of biological macromolecules are discussed. It is shown that, in this field, high energy electron or positron storage rings and their insertion devices are currently the best available sources for both monochromatic and polychromatic data collection. The gap between the potential of such sources and area detectors which are currently available is emphasized.
