Abstract
By providing pharmaceutical care, the pharmacist is part of an interdisciplinary approach to the care of chronic pain patients. Due to their proximity to the patients, the pharmacist is involved at every stage of the patient's care. The impact of pharmaceutical care has been demonstrated not only in the literature, in improving pain sufferers' feelings, but also in the fight against drug iatrogenicity in pain sufferers, for whom polypharmacy is common. The clinical pharmacy procedure most frequently described in the literature is the medication review. Pharmaceutical support for patients in pain is also provided during the pharmaceutical interviews offered to patients and is an integral part of the shared decision-making process and the choice of analgesic treatment. The function of the pharmacist in the chronic pain patient's care pathway is illustrated through three French case studies. The first illustration positions the pharmacist's activities within an interdisciplinary team at a pain assessment and treatment center, followed by the pharmacist's role in the proper use of strong opioid analgesics in a rheumatology department. Finally, the function of the dispensing pharmacist notably in screening, guidance and advice on the proper use of self-medication analgesics is described.
