Abstract
Bread, which was an indispensable food item in the diet of different cultures since centuries, was also an important foodstuff in Ottoman-Turkish cuisine. Besides its nutritional importance, bread had also symbolic meanings. The aim of this paper is to define and distinguish various senses that were attributed to the bread in Ottoman culture, and at the same time, to see the persistence of these symbolic meanings in today’s Turkish culture. Dictionaries, proverbs, some examples of mystical poetry and folkloric texts constitute the primary sources of this study.
