Abstract

SUMMARY The Middle Loire region has an undeniable vocation as a holiday and weekend resort area. Favoured by suitable sites, it has above all the advantage of being within easy reach of Paris. Out of 11 680 holiday and weekend homes counted in over 300 tax registers, 7 593 (i.e. 65 %) were occupied by Parisians in 1971. Among the main local towns, only Tours has developed its own holiday area for its inhabitants : 37 % of holiday and weekend homes in the Indre-et-Loire department (only 11 % of holiday and weekend homes in the Loiret department belong to people from Orleans). The Parisians who own holiday home in the Middle Loire region tend to live in Paris itself rather than the suburbs, and in certain districts of Paris (1st, 6th, 7th, 8th and 16th « arrondissements ») rather than others (10th, 11th, 18th, 19th and 20th « arrondissements »). The study of the exact situation of the principal residences of Parisians provides information about the social contrasts between the different districts of the capital. Similary, it enables an assessment to be made at the same time of the social origins of the occupants of holiday homes in the Middle Loire region.
