Abstract
The strict carrying out of funeral rites was a sign of respect for the person departing life. It required the observation of rituals related to agony end death, the preparing of the dead, the taking of the corpse to the service, the burial and finally the g iving of funeral rites. These rites would often be accompanied by beliefs and customs, such as lamentation. The funeral attire and the objects placed in the coffin, were particularity important, as well as the commemorative meal organised after the religious service. However, these rites were not observed for the "impure" dead.
