Abstract

Franco-British relations under Georges Pompidou. Towards a Paris-London axis ? Although the failure of the second British application in 1967 had introduced great tensions between London and Paris under de Gaulle ’s présidence, favourable factors modified relations following the arrival of George Pompidou and Edward Heath. While Franco-German relations were less close since the arrival of Willy Brandt, the negotiations which opened with Britain and the other candidates show the clear determination in both London and Paris to find an area of agreement. In addition, in an international situation marked by financial and economic crisis, the strength of London as a financial centre was a factor which weighed heavily in the final negotiations. Furthermore, Heath seemed very favourable to the perspectives being expressed just before the October 1972 Paris Conference regarding the reinforcement of the European Community.
