SummaryA survey is presented on the development of connective tissue research, since, in 1928, Duran-Reynals discovered the spreading factor of testicular extract and since, some years later, Karl Meyer and collaborators isolated the enzyme hyaluronidase from bacteria.The investigations into the structures of cells and fibrils have passed from the magnifications of the light microscope, through those of the electron microscope, to the molecular level.An intimate collaboration between chemists, physicists and morpholo-gists have led to important results.Mesenchymal physiology forms the bridge to pathology and medicine. Pathologists have supplied medicine with some knowledge about fibrinoid, hyaline, amyloid and paramyloid substances of diseased connective tissue.
