Abstract

Benjamin Franklin's Recipes for Happiness. In his Autobiography, Benjamin Franklin presents the archetypal American hero who devotes his life to the pursuit of happiness. The social rise of his character is the result of ceaseless hard work and a systematic quest for knowledge. The obscure man goes on to become a public figure and takes part in founding the new nation. The narration of his life belongs to the tradition of the Ancients and serves as an exemplum for his readers who are offered both a recipe for private happiness and advice on how to promote the development of a happy nation.
