Abstract

Raptors, because they are predators, were thought of as warrior birds by the Greeks : this is proved not only by the numerous comparisons and metaphors which can be found in literature from the Homeric poems onwards, but also by the iconographic documents. In this paper we will see how warrior raptors are drawn in Greek ceramics – how we can (or cannot) recognize what sort of bird is pictured, and in what different types of scenes these birds can be found.
