Abstract

Delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions to heparins, which had for a long time been mistaken for skin necrosis at the injection site, are now well recognized. We report a 9-case series in which the patients presented cutaneous manifestations during the course of treatment with heparin. The allergy workup of these patients confirmed the diagnosis and also the existence of cross-reactions between different heparins as well as with heparinoids. This study shows the importance and the limits of skin testing with these substances. When done correctly, skin tests enable one to propose therapeutic options in case anticoagulant therapy is to be continued or is planned, especially since this type of hypersensitivity seems to persist.
