Abstract

The social relationships between sexes are asymmetric. This asymmetry finds its expression by a hierarchy of statutes and roles between men and women. From the perspective of the Cultural Socialization model, we suppose these asymmetries are grounded in the particular social roles and positions occupied by men and women. We propose to study them by comparing the decisions taken by handball referees’. The analysis, based on matches’ data of males and females in regional and European championships, compares the number of disciplinary fault by players’ sex, and the number (i.e., alone or dyad) and sex of referees. All else being equal, the observed differences at regional level do not appear at European level.
