Abstract

Children's perception of parental rearing practices The aim of this study was to validate a French version of the Parent Perception Inventory (Hazzard et al., 1983), les Pratiques éducatives parentales perçues par l'enfant (peppe). Another objective was to determine if children's perception is related to child's gender, parent's gender, family income, and parental disciplinary practices. The participants were 104 children (54 boys and 50 girls) aged 8 to 11 years and their parents. The results show that peppe is both valid and reliable. They also indicate that children 's perception iincludes two dimensions : parental support and control. These two dimensions are independent but the scores attributed to both parents on either dimension are strongly related. The peppe scores are related to child's gender, parent's gender, and family income. Finally, the use of corporal punishment by parents is associated with higher control scores. In general, the results indicate the importance of taking into account the child's point of view when studying parental rearing practices.
