Abstract

Summary : The educational practices of twins' mothers : an investigation using correspondence analysis. In research on twins' birth consequences, maternal patterns of child-rearing appeared either to facilitate, or to hinder, the twins' individualization process. The present study analyses patterns of care to determine which lend themselves best to differentiation strategies. A correspondence analysis is used to identify associations among variables. It derives from a contingency table associating variables and pinpoint co-occurences of response categories. Proximity between variables is expressed as deviations from independence. These can be plotted onto a factorial design. Forty families of one-year old twins (16 MZ and 24 DZ) were interviewed and observed in their homes. The findings show that : 1) differentiation strategies are easier to put into practice in some forms of daily care than others (choice of dress and toys in contrast to bed time and meals). 2) more importantly differentiation strategies are associated with both degree of twins' zygoty, mother's SES and parity. Key words : maternal educational practices, infant-twins, correspondence analysis.
