Abstract Analyzes shore processes along the coast in the vicinity of Tangier. Sandy sediment is produced and transported mainly by marine currents and waves, and to some extent by eolian action by the east winds; the fluviatile contribution is negligible. Construction of a breakwater has upset the sedimentary equilibrium and cut off the great beach at Tangier from its normal source of supply. As a result, transfer of sand within the bay is limited to the perimeter of the beach; erosion is taking place at the eastern end, sedimentation at the western, and a new beach is being built up east of the jetty. Although some silting of the roadstead has begun, it is predicted that this will diminish and not seriously affect the port.
