Abstract

Abstract : The article deals with the municipal policies designed to create or develop a centre in the peri-urban municipalities. These municipalities have recently undergone considerable urbanisation. However, their identity is still not clear as it remains subordinate to the general needs of the developing urban region. Centre policies represent a new attempt to provide local space with some sort of substance. Through its political and symbolic significations, and its capacity to activate feelings of belonging and local identity, the centre is able to contribute to the promotion of a public space with a common interest and a collective meaning. The centre thus provides the support and necessary conditions for the construction of a communal « territory » and the acquisition of the status of «city ».
