Abstract

New autoantibodies (Abs) encountered in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) may be categorized as those related to the diagnosis, those related to the prognosis and those related to the pathophysiology. Among Abs useful to the diagnosis, Abs to α-fodrine or to Golgi apparatus have proved disappointing. Relevant antinuclear Abs target 60 and 52 kD peptides on sicca syndrome A particles, and a 48 kD peptide on sicca syndrome B particles. Abs associated with the prognosis are directed to thyroid or liver proteins, but IgA rheumatoid factor warrants also to be mentionned. With regard to the pathophysiology, light is shed by anti-carbonic anhydrase and antipolymorphonuclear neutrophil Abs, and, above all, Abs towards type 3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors.
