Abstract

This article aims at precisely defining the relationship that exists in Old French between two types of utterances that are usually assimilated : utterances with future verbs combined with the adverb mar - <mar + future> - and negative imperatives. By referring to the distinction between explicit and implicit content, and to the existing ordering between them, we claim that <mar + future> utterances have an injunctive behaviour of their own : the injunctive interpretation of <mar + future> utterances is always based on one of their implicit contents ; moreover, it can be justified only on the grounds of a contextual analysis of the utterances.
