Abstract

Migrants of Senegal river: When is the « Diams'pora »? Sylvie BREDELOUP Originating from the valley of Senegal river (Senegal, Mali, Mauritania), muslim merchants venture into little explored zones in search of precious stones. The ways they follow are not submitted at all to the laws of fate. In view of conquering what is far away and illicit, they compose their territory not as a succession of broken up spaces, but definitely as a network of firmly interconnected solidarities. These people «from around here and from somewhere else » do not only build new identities by syncretism but they also develop highly elaborate residential systems. Combining several family units and several activities, they make various uses of the territory. Great travellers, they feel at ease with their attache case and their three-piece suit in the plane taking them from Bujumbura to Geneva just as well as with their large « boubou » in a migrant tradesmen reunion in Dakar, at the mosque or in the village, in family, on the river.
