Rightly disturbed, he wished to know if the nutritionists had repealed those laws of physics by which the rest of us live and work, thus relieving the strain on family food budgets in these days of rapid inflation. Regretfully, I had to assure him that a diet of AMA joules would not sustain life although it would, no doubt, temporarily encourage weight loss amongst those consuming it. Perhaps this might be appropriate on occasion. Unfortunately, the joule we know and love represents the work done in accelerating 1 kg of mass 1 meter/sec/sec over a distance of 1 meter. And 12 to 15 million of these joules daily consumed will, as always, dent the exchequer smartly while augmenting the girth of those unfortunates among us to whom a
