Abstract

It is not generally realized that the Siamese settlements of Phuket, Bangkok, and Mergui all had French governors in the period 1682-1688 ; in all three cases they had been preceded by other foreigners, respectively Indian, Turkish and Portuguese, and English. The article details the careers and ends of the different governors, whose tenure of office was cut short soon after Petracha's coup d'état in May 1688. Only two of the governors, who both had the good sense to withdraw from their posts while the going was good, lived to die peacefully in their beds.
