Abstract
The study of the Saint-Maur Congregation conversi (lay brothers) refers to the first and properly religious aspect of the Maurist reform. The subject is of great interest for an anthropological approach to Benedictine monasticism in modern times. The vocation of conversi is apprehended here with two kinds of complementary questions, one concerning normative texts, the other with annals and chronicles, obituaries or biographical notices. Having a full religious status and because of their personal profile, Maurist conversi played an essential role both spiritually and socially, and they assumed a « strategical » place inside monasteries as well as in their monastic networks.
