Abstract

Abstract Detailed study of ferruginous Hauterivian (Cretaceous) deposits of the Bargeme region, France, shows that there is a close relation between glauconite, glauconite altered by iron hydroxide, and ferruginous oolites. Iron of continental origin is a genetic factor common to all three. Reacting in an alternately reducing and oxidizing environment, the iron was responsible for formation of glauconite by combination with clay minerals, and of iron hydroxide. The glauconite is thus a true ore mineral comparable to the chlorites of the Lorraine basin.
