Abstract

In this text, the author tries to define the significance of the openfield in the western Loire-Atlantique. According to the results of the measurements taken on a representative sample of the family of such openfields, the author suggests that the character of this country can be explained by the different utilisation of natural sites, bearing in mind the potentialities of the land and the way it faces (this being governed by the solar calendar). This way of developing an area also depends on the extent to which the environments favourable and unfavourable qualities offset one another.
