Abstract

The systematic analysis of 479 landslides in North-eastern Sicily brinqs to re-evaluate the share of the different factors habitually invoked to explain their starting and their extension. Major factors seem to be the combination of a weak cohesion of the rocks, dense cracking (three or more cracks by m2 ) in coherent rocks, a strong slope and a strong preliminary dissection of the relief (all passive or latent elements), with a marked action of running waters or infiltrated waters at the beginning or end of humid season, which are dynamic elements. The role of the rain volume, of the orientation, of the density and the disposition of the vegetable shelter appears more limited, just as that recent building and road adjustments, if one does not place them in sectors already naturally unstable.
