Abstract

Although in recent centuries the European continent has lost only two species of birds (the Bald Ibis and the Great Auk) by extinction, about twenty additional species are now threatened at least as nesting birds. The seriousness of the threat of extermination naturally varies in different cases and is difficult to assess. But if we try to classify the ‘disappearing’ species according to the imminence of danger to each, we can place them in four categories: (i) very gravely threatened are the Dalmatian Pelican, the Flamingo, the White-headed Duck, the Bearded Vulture, and two borderline ca cases; (ii) gravely threatened are seven species and two others less seriously; (iii) potentially threatened are four species; (iv) needful of watching in this connection are three species. It is urgently necessary to study each problem and to apply remedies before it is too late.
