Abstract

Ankle sprain are one of the most frequent sport injuries and can occur with every type of sport activity. The anterior talofibular ligament is the most injured ligament and can lead to sequelae (chronic pain, ankle instability). The severity of sprain is linked to the type of the lesion (partial or complete tear) and to the number of ligaments involved. Physical examination 4 to 5 days after the initial injury remains the most efficient way to assess the severity of the sprain and the eventual associated lesions. Treatment of acute ankle sprain is based on painkillers, anti-inflammatory with early mobilization and functional physiotherapy (postural control and proprioception) to enable a quick recovery and avoid chronic ankle instability.
