Abstract

The determinants of the presence of foreign banks in France This paper examines the determinants of the presence of foreign banks in France over the period 1982-1996. The paper uses a model developed by Grosse and Goldberg (1991), Ursacki et Vertinsky (1992) to test the determinants of the number of foreign banks in France according to their country of origin. The empirical results indicate that the size of the banking sector in the Foreign country it cornes from and the foreign trade with France are, positively correlated with the number of Foreign banks present on the French market. Geographic distance is negatively correlated with the presence of Foreign banks in France. Foreign direct investment in France does not explain the number of foreign banks present in France.
