Abstract

During the 13th century Cyprus was a hotbed for local artistic workshops. The geographical distribution of a large corpus of 13th century cypriot icons, recently recovered and restored, within different regions of the island has allowed us to retrace the activities of various local workshops. These workshops, shaped by the particular conditions in each region, produced work of diverse artistic tendencies, experimenting with their craft not only in terms of style but also in the manner with which local artists treated iconography.
