Abstract

In a world opposing rich countries having secured most vital needs and poor countries thrying to increase their standard of living, access to water and electricity is one of the most important challenge of the century. Among the various sources of energy, hydropower - one of the least polluting sources - is the target of some NGOs pretending to act for the sake of the environment when fighting against hydropower companies without any lobbying strength (as compared to the oil industry). With members from wealthy countries and growth and credibility problems, such NGOs are aware of the ambiguity of their fight. Against such attack, the professional hydro world should keep on working on environmental issues for any hydro project, refuse anti-NGO attitude, tie with NGOs acting on development and make the communication effort required to change the image of hydro which has contributed and will contribute to the world development.
