The two diaries of José Santos Vargas. 1: problems of edition Abstract The discovery of the diary of the guérillero leader José Santos Vargas add to our knowledge of the history of the independance war in the Alto Peru. However, the existence of two different manuscripts, both published by don Gunnar Mendoza, the first in Bolivia, 1952, the second in Mexico, 1982, present historians with problems that have been obscured by the editor's choices. In this first part of the two parts article, we question the scientific value of the edition of 1982.
