Abstract

Further to a short presentation on Phoenix dactylifera or the date palm, the authors deal with the conditions with which this tree needs to grow and bear fruit, in particular in the Sahara. They will then trace its history and its cultural status. The different varieties of dates and their medical and alimentary use are presented. Finally the present situation is briefly discussed.
