Abstract

Gianluigi Goggi : The contracts for the third edition of the "Histoire des Deux Indes". Using documents from the State Archives in Geneva and the Bodleian Library in Oxford, this article attempts to describe the network of relations between Parisian and Genevan publishers which resulted in the third edition of the Histoire des Deux Indes, printed in Geneva in 1780 by J.-L. Pellet. The documents show clearly the technical and financial role played by J.G.A. Stoupe, a printer and publisher who, after working with Le Breton, publisher of the Encyclopédie, took his place among the Paris printers. The role of Ch. J. Panckoucke was more discreet but no less important. From this chapter in publishing history we can see that the publication of the Histoire des Deux Indes was a continuation of the "business of Enlightenment" recently described by R. Darnton.
