Abstract

The analysis of this set of candidates (PC, PS, MRG, RPR and the component parts of the UDF) supplements the study carried oui al the time of the previous vote (Revue française de science politique, 28 (5), October 1978). The hurried circumstances in which the 1981 élections were organized explain to some extent why there was relatively Unie renewad of candidates, which resulted in their aging. This is not the only common feature. In both votes, all parties sought to ensure that they were solidly established at the local level, and found it difficult to allow a larger proportion of female candidates. Socio-occupational changes reveal three phenomena : confirmation of thé specificity of thé RPR, doser relations between thé PC and the other parties, and strengthening of the median position of the PS.
