Abstract

The brigades are presented as a test of the determination to democratize firms in line with economic reforms in Eastern Europe. The conclusion, probably more optimistic than the given data would lead us to be, shows the author's commitment to these reforms. Their semisuccess and similarity to the democratic labor management measures with which we are familial in Social Democratic systems are explained by the economic and social situation in Bulgaria : because there is less political and social tension than in Poland or even the USSR, workers are readier to become involved in more participative institutions despite critical attitudes about the actual state of reforms.
