Abstract

The Medical Library of Jagiellonian University in Cracow consists of the Central Library and 70 small libraries at different institutes and clinics. The distances between Central Library, university centre, and branch libraries differ from 10 to 20 km. and this is a main reason for library dysfunctioning. An attempt, undertaken in 1996, to restructure the old library system, led to certain solutions. The assessment of these improvements is subject of this presentation. Among the barriers for facilitating access to information sources the most important was and is lack of telecommunication infrastructure in the area where the Central Library is located. Waiting for optimal solution to this problem (fiberoptic cable) didn’t slow down changes in the library services, an introduction of several technological improvements. Among these changes are: the development of Intranet, providing network services through other, co-operating with us institutions, (i.e. access to MEDLINE installed at the host of Institute of Physics), modernisation of the library rooms, changes in organisational structure and in human resources policy, specialisation of information services, and new projects aiming towards tightening the co-operation among librarians, doctors and pharmacists. These developments allow for considerable optimism when looking into the future of medical library services in Cracow.
