Abstract

Myocardial protection against ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with activation of the PI3K-AKT and p44/42 MAPK signalling pathways, collectively known as the RISK pathway. Leptin, first identified as an obesity associated hormone, has been demonstrated to diminish I/R injury in the heart via activation of RISK pathway components. There are several different isoforms of the leptin receptor with most data suggesting that the OB-RB leptin receptor is the most physiologically important.
