Abstract

Here we describe new lepisosteid gar remains from the Middle Cretaceous (Albian-Cenomanian) Alcântara Formation of the São Luis Basin, Northeastern Brazil. The material, consisting of two fragments of the lower jaw, shows the following Lepisosteidae characters: ornamentation of the teeth with longitudinal ridges and the typical plicidentine. The new discovery, as well as material previously described from the Açu Formation of the Potiguar Basin represent the oldest records of Lepisosteidae in South America. These records are coeval with †Atractosteus (Oniichthys) fulipoui from the Kem Kem Group of Morocco.
