Abstract

AbstractThe lens‐forming capacity of the pericorneal epidermis of Xenopus laevis larvae at stage 51 has been investigated. The results obtained show that, whether or not the lens is present, the pericorneal epidermis can form a lens when it is in direct contact with the vitreous chamber of the eye. It is concluded that the posterior pole of the lens either does not produce any inhibiting substances or else is unable effectively to remove the factor(s) contained in the vitreous chamber which are responsible for the lens‐forming transformations of the pericorneal epidermis.
