Abstract

In determining ways to resolve the real and vitally important problems of the development of socialism, the CPSU and fraternal communist parties devote special attention to discovering and overcoming contradictions and mistakes that impede the progress of the socialist countries. The 26th Congress of the CPSU posed the following problems to social scientists: "To analyze the phenomena of the political life of society" more deeply and more boldly, not to shun burning topics, and not to be afraid to "broach the difficult questions … remembering that if we do not confront these questions, those who are hostile to our country will attempt to make use of this to slander socialism."1 The June 1983 Plenum of the CPSU Central Committee also made a plea to combat more resolutely avoidance of the acute problems of life.2 The sociopolitical crises in the development of the socialist countries belongs to this set of issues.
