Abstract

A 29 year-old housewife was admitted with the complaint of a slight pain on swallowing of 18 months duration. She was found to have a tumor at the right posterior pharynx. As the first step of surgical procedure, tracheostomy and ligation of the right external carotid artery were performed. Under general anesthesia by intubation through the tracheostoma, the median incision on the soft palate was made. Thus we could approach the tumor transorally, and could remove the entire tumor with blunt dissection in a short time. The pathological examination revealed a leiomyoma probably originating from vascular smooth muscle.Myomas in the pharynx are considered to be comparatively rare in occurrence. Furthermore, leiomyomas in the retropharyngeal space are even more infrequent.
