Abstract

SUMMARY Leibniz's contribution to studies on the strength of beams is not very clear from the current literature. Leibniz's works, though known, have not received the proper attention. This paper includes an attempt to make up for this override by referring to the integral translation from Latin of two important contributions. A record appeared in the «Acta Eruditorum» of 1684 and in a letter to Jakob Bernoulli of 1690. The presentation of Leibniz's texts is preceded by an explicative essay which frames Leibniz's work in its historical context and tries to decode his argumentations.
