E J Aiton 1985 Bristol: Adam Hilger viii + 370 pp price £29.50 (IOP members' price £23.60) ISBN 0 85274 470 6 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz of Leipzig (1646–1716) is chiefly remembered among scientists today for his coinvention with Newton of the differential calculus, for his introduction of the concept of vis viva or kinetic energy, his calculating machine, his pioneering work in symbolic logic and his energetic promotion of scientific research and scientific academies. Few fields of contemporary enquiry, however, escaped the critical scrutiny of Leibniz.
