Abstract

AbstractLegislation is distinct from other sources of law such as unwritten custom and judicial decisions by judges or juries. Legislation first appeared in the Greek and Roman world with the introduction of writing and was always associated with a legislative body or person(s) with delegated rule‐making authority. Legislation is one part of a larger legal culture in the Greek and Roman world. How legislative rules were enacted, interpreted, applied, and amended was largely determined by specific social and political circumstances.
