Abstract

The readers are provided with the knowledge of avoiding the accumulated visual strain to human eyes so as to keep their body and mind healthy after contiguous read operations on a display for a long time. Data of legibility for liquid crystal displays of thin-film-transistor types (TFT-LCDs) were acquired for the backlight of white light emitting diode (LED) matrices compared to that of two-row cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). The legibility tested for a TFT-LCD with white LED matrices showed the higher performance than that which was tested for another TFT-LCD with two-row CCFLs. The relative efficiency of works for the display operations contiguously carried out for a time span of 0 to 90 minutes for the former was higher than the latter by a factor of 10 %. In the study we found variations in luminance and illuminance of the light power from the backlight might cause the fatigue to the human eyes. From this point of view, the backlight of white LED matrices was found to be superior to that of two-row CCFLs.
