Abstract

This chapter focuses on the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means. Since the adoption of the UN Charter, the use of force to settle international disputes is prohibited to all members of the United Nations, and this prohibition is now regarded as a rule of general international law. Topics discussed include sovereign equality and the role of consent, dispute settlement mechanisms, settlement vs prevention, special regimes, and the Euro–Atlantic relationship.
