Abstract

There is an increasing need for standardized cadastral systems to enable involved parties to communicate based on shared vocabulary. This chapter provides an overview of standardization efforts in the field of cadastral systems. Two approaches are introduced: the land administration domain model and the INSPIRE data specification for cadastral parcels. Standardization does not really make sense without looking back to the roots of cadastral systems. Therefore, some historical facts about cadastre systems are provided. Today, the cadastre fulfills all legal, administrative, and private-sector demands. To meet these requirements, a digital system called Automated Property Register (ALB) has been implemented in Germany, and in addition the cadastral maps are fully digitized. This system is called Automated Cadastral Map (ALK) and is a basic land information system of great variety and flexibility. Finally, an outline is drawn towards a new integrated cadastral information system called ALKIS (Official Real Estate Cadastre Information System), harmonizing the models of ALK and the topographic database (ATKIS). It also integrates the cadastral map and the land titles into a single model. The chapter closes with a discussion of implementational aspects.
