Abstract

This chapter for a textbook on Critical Care Medicine concentrates on the chief legal ramifications of practice in that medical sphere in the United States. Specific legal areas covered, with an emphasis on their particular application to Critical Care practitioners, include: informed consent and refusal; decisional capacity and surrogate decision making; decisions to limit treatment; institutional protocols and supports; determinations of death; legal responsibility and vicarious liability; documentation; and risk management.
