Abstract

Shorter length of stay and earlier discharge from hospitals have meant that the role of the community nurse has changed radically over recent years. Many patients are discharged still needing a high level of nursing input. The concept of the hospital at home requires that community nurses possess skills which would in the past have only been practised in a hospital setting. The traditional role of the community nurse has developed so that he/she is now expected to be able to provide many of the skills used by a nurse in an acute medical or surgical ward.
