Abstract
A 16-year-old girl under local authority care was suffering from anorexia nervosa. At one point she was fed by nasogastric tube and had her arms encased in plaster. Her condition became critical and she refused to move to a specialist hospital. The local authority applied to the High Court for the girl to be transferred to a treatment unit without her consent, and for leave to give her medical treatment without her consent. Leave was given by the High Court judge. By 30 June, although 5 feet, 7 inches tall, she weighed only 5 stone, 7 pounds. The Court of Appeal made an emergency order enabling her to be taken to and treated at a specialist hospital in London, notwithstanding her lack of consent (Re W (a minor) (medical treatment) [1992]).
